Modern web applications are no longer passive pages that users refresh occasionally to see new information and today users expect applications to feel alive. Messages should appear instantly. Dashboards update the moment data changes. Notifications arrive without delay. Collaborative tools reflect other users' actions in real time. Real time updates are now standard in chat apps, live sports score pages, trading dashboards, and, delivery tracking interfaces. This shift has fundamentally changed how frontends and backends communicate.
So at the heart of this change is the need to move beyond the request response model of HTTP because classic HTTP was designed for a web where the browser asked for a page, the server responded and, the connection closed. This worked well for static content. It also worked for low frequency updates. But it struggles. When applications need to send continuous data. Or near instant updates. The difference between user expectations and HTTP's original design prompted developers to create new patterns to mimic real time behavior. This resulted in techniques like HTTP polling also later streaming based methods such as Server Sent Events (SSE).
Why real time updates matter in modern web apps
Real time updates impact user experience, engagement, & trust as information arrives and users feel the app is responsive and reliable, you know. Delays cause confusion or frustration. In a messaging app. If there was a delay of a few seconds. Users might resend messages. Or they might have thought the app was broken. In financial or monitoring dashboards, stale data can result in poor decisions or missed opportunities.
But beyond UX real time communication also affects system efficiency and business outcomes because applications that push updates only when something changes can reduce unnecessary user actions like repeated refreshes or manual retries. From a product view. Real time features set apart modern applications. They are different from older competitors. Collaboration occurs. Alerts happen. Feeds update. These are characteristics of today’s software.
Traditional HTTP is sort of client driven where the client starts every interaction in addition to the server just responds to those requests. When polling still makes sense
